Loco Lamp Codes
Railway locomotives show lamps in the direction they are traveling to indicate to signalmen and other line workers the type of train being hauled. At RSME Rallies the locos show the correct prototypical head codes for the roster turn duty they are on. The word descriptions of the lamp positions are from the point of view of the driver looking in the direction of travel. The loco may be either way round (except Yard pilot engines which show a red and a white light at each end all trains will show a single red lamp behind).
Head codes D, E and F are for ‘partially fitted’ or ‘unfitted’ trains. Fitted refers to the trucks or stock having brakes under the control of the driver.
